ROLEX DAYTONA REF. 16528 / N35xxxx FULL YELLOW GOLD 18KT WITH BLACK DIAL AND INVERTED 6 PRODUCE YEAR 1991 / WARRANTY YEAR 1992 What makes this piece even more special is the inverted six on the subdial. The watch has a case size of 40 mm and is made from 18k yellow gold. This is watch is for the true daredevil, not for the regular guy! It runs on a Zenith movement, with caliber 4030 and comes with a beautiful yellow-gold Oyster bracelet. Rolex started making chronographs in the 1930s, but it was only in 1963 that a named product line was introduced: the Cosmograph. In some early advertisements, Rolex referred to the watch as the ‘Le Mans’ after the famous race track in France, although the name never appeared on the dial. After a few years, the line was officially renamed Cosmograph Daytona, after the racetrack in Florida. The most noticeable difference between these Cosmograph (Daytona) models and earlier Rolex chronographs, was the tachymeter scale (used for measuring distance and speed) that was moved from its traditional placement on the dial to the bezel. Furthermore, the dial was updated with the introduction of contrasting sub-dials It’s hard to imagine now, but Daytonas received little love after their release. Most Daytonas languished in dealer displays for years and were only started to get noticed by Italian collectors and dealers in the late 1980s. Nowadays, Daytonas are among the most sought after Rolex models, fetching prices from $15,000 for modern ones to many millions for rare vintage references. A big contrast with the $210 list price when it was first released! Reference 16520 was the first automatic Rolex Daytona and introduced in 1988. It was equipped with the calibre 4030 which is a modified version of the 'Zenith' El Primero movement. For this reason, collector's refer to this reference as the 'Zenith' Daytona. It is similar in appearance to its successor reference 116520 which was introduced at the Basel fair in 2000. The new model incorporated the completely in-house Rolex calibre 4130, had both chronograph counters slightly above the 3 and 9 o'clock markers, as well as swapped the position of the subsidiary seconds with the chronograph hours counter. On the verge of becoming vintage while still preserving a modern look, the 'Zenith' Daytona is gaining in popularity and collectability. At one point only hidden in the shadows of the famous manual winding Daytona references, it has become a model to look out for with its own particularities and variations. The present lot further carries the nickname 'Inverted 6' which is due to the chronograph hour counter having the 3, 6, 9 and 12 hour indications printed in a way that the 6 is actually upside down, thus appearing like a 9.
